THE LAKE DISTRICT

What a special place made better by good weather and fantastic hosts.  The Lake District is becoming our favorite stop on our trip. (So far). David and Marilyn our hosts at Bybeck B&B went over the top in making our stay an enjoyable one.  Nice comfortable room, great full English breakfast and loads of information about the area.

David and Marilyn stated their B&B about 6 years ago after David retired from a profession like mine.   They have a beautiful home made of native slate, mined from the hills above their home.  Most of the buildings in the area of made of slate, which is green in these parts.  Both of them are involved in their small village of Grange, David taking care of the village chapel which is next door.

This is the double arch bridge leading into the village.  You only see
one arch in the photo.  The bridge crosses the River Derwent and was
built in 1675!

David and Marilyn provided us with detailed directions (see previous post) for walks in the fells above the valley.  This is really beautiful country with trails everywhere.  Our first walk took us up the fell and over the other side into a beautiful valley.  At the valley end we arrived at Watendlath Farm where you could purchase refreshments. Of course we stopped and had tea and cake just like the locals.  We climbed up out of the valley and back down the other side of the fell arriving in Rosthwaite where we recovered from the walk in the local pub. Just about everywhere you walk here, there are places to stop and get something to eat and drink.  This is my kind of walking.  Here are some photos of our walk.

After such a beautiful walk, we challenged David and Marilyn to come up with another walk with better scenery.  After the next morning after breakfast David drove us to the start of our next walk, stopping along the way to show us some of the views over Derwentwater.

This time David sent us up another fell and along a ridge overlooking Derwentwater and the city of Keswick. Great views of the lake below and the city.  The selected track took us down into the city for lunch after which we went to the Theater on the Lake to look at and photograph exhibition which included photographs taken by both David and Marilyn.  They are both really good photographers putting to shame my humble attempts at photography..  Next up we boarded a launch for a boat ride back down the lake.
